What is Deshaun Watson's True Potential?

What is Deshaun Watson's True Potential?
Nick Gaschler

Today I take a true look at one of the league’s best quarterbacks right now-Deshaun Watson. The former
Clemson standout was drafted to the Houston Texans 12th overall after a rocky Junior campaign at
Clemson.

After Tom Savage got benched in the Week One opening loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars,
Watson came in and performed well. In a Week Two TNF showdown with the Bengals, Watson
showed his first true flash of potential. In Week Three, the Texans fell to the New England
Patriots, but Watson almost had Tom Brady’s number in the showdown. This is when most
everyone in the NFL realized Deshaun Watson was legit. Watson continued to impress ending
his next 3 games 2-1 before the bye week. After the bye week, Watson and company traveled to
Seattle and almost had the mighty Seahawks number just barely losing by 3 points. However,
during practice Watson tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season. The Texans went 4-12
to end out the season, but I am confident the Texans would have finished above .500.

However, just how good will Watson be? Well the second year QB is already a top contender for
Comeback Player of the Year. He plays on a talented Houston Texans team with DeAndre
Hopkins, Will Fuller, Lamar Miller, and more his offense is set despite a lacking offensive line.
But the defense should cover his tail if he makes mistakes with a healthy JJ Watt, Whitney
Mercilus, and Jadeveon Clowney, and Tyrann Mathieu among other top defensive support
players. So I honestly predict the Texans winning the division and finishing with a top record
in the NFL and making the playoffs. They have the talent to make a deep playoff run if everyone
is healthy as I predict and I see them going to the Super Bowl or getting close to it, but they don’t
win it.

The next year with another year of experience under his belt, Watson could become really good.
With AFC powerhouse QB’s retirements being imminent as well, Watson rises to the top of the
top in the AFC and has a pretty easy road back to the Super Bowl which I see him winning
that year. In the year following, he will likely compete for a very long time and if his whole team
is healthy, he could end up bringing Houston more than a couple Super Bowl championships
and at least a couple MVP awards. But, this may not last for long. His mobility increases his
chance at injury and he could very well end up injured a couple times which may end up
damaging his legacy.

Overall, Watson’s legacy will be well-known as the guy who has assisted in bringing back
the mobile QB concept as well as an all around elite QB of his time. Whether he ends up
just as I predicted or a little bit less, many, including myself were wrong about Watson and
he could end up being elite quicker than we all thought.
