Which Sophomores are Poised for a Breakout Season?
Nick Gaschler

Every year you see a young player break out and go to the Pro Bowl or become a star on their team. Last year it was Jared Goff and William Jackson. The year before it was Melvin Gordon. These players have become stars and now we look towards the next group of Sophomores ready to break out so without further ado, let’s get into it.

Mitchell Trubisky-QB-Chicago Bears

The kid wasn’t bad in 2017, but was definitely overlooked due to a lack of playmakers on offense. A 59.4 completion percentage, about 2,200 yards and 7 touchdowns isn’t much, but with new playmakers in Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and Anthony Miller, Trubisky should improve a lot. This will make the Bears offense a lot better and should put Trubisky in the spotlight.

Dalvin Cook-RB-Minnesota Vikings

The talented runner got off to a fast start in 2017 before tearing his ACL. In 2018, if he’s back healthy he could really end up being a top runner in the league. The Vikings situation is a lot better with Captain Kirk and Cook will likely benefit from that as well.

Corey Davis-WR-Tennessee Titans

The Titans drafted the WR Corey Davis 5th overall and he only caught 34 balls for 375 yards and a whooping zero touchdowns. This guy NEEDS to breakout. They don’t have a great WR to target with Eric Decker’s departure and Marcus Mariota can’t scramble every play. SO why not throw it to the best WR to come out of that 2017 Draft class.

Jonathan Allen-DL-Washington Redskins

Allen is a big time player but with only 10 tackles and 1 sack in 2017, I feel his presence will be felt more coming back from his injury. With Da’Ron Payne, a former teammate on the line with him, the Redskins will likely have the Allen that they wanted when they drafted him back and not the injured one.

Malik Hooker-S-Indianapolis Colts

Malik Hooker was a huge player for the Colts before he was injured and while I could also add Deshaun Watson below because he is in the same boat, I feel he did more. Either way back to Hooker, the kid already finished with 3 interceptions and I feel with a full season of learning and some experience, Hooker is going to be a stud.

Jabrill Peppers-S-Cleveland Browns
Jabrill had a really underwhelming season at free safety because it wasn’t his natural position. Now with the addition of Damarious Randall to take his spot, Peppers can move back to strong safety, his natural position and rebound well in this sophomore season. Denzel Ward should also help Peppers improve in 2018.
